INDIA THROUGH TO THE FINAL OF “PRINCESS CUP”
Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, May 16, 2018 – India overcame a sturdy challenge from Australia to cruise past the tough rivals in the hard-fought three-setter in the semi-finals of the “Princess Cup” 20th Est Cola South East Asian Women’s U17 Volleyball Championship at the Nakhon Pathom Sports Centre Gymnasium on Wednesday.
The hotly-contested battle which ended 28-26, 25-22, 25-23 in favour of India handed the team a berth for the final showdown.
Krishanan Anagha Radha topscored India with 18 points, while Elakiya M.muthu added 13 points. Annielies Jones scored a team-high 20 points for Australia.
The first set was a close contest when both teams had their chances to take the set, but it was the Indians who capitalized from their opponents’ errors to take the thrilling first set 28-26.
Australia tried hard to make a comeback in the second set, but found the rivals a tough nut to crack, foiling in their attempts to cope with India’s fierce attacks. India took control of the game at the near end of the second set, winning 25-22.
The third set saw the lead change hands several times as both teams poured everything they had, but Jangra Ajay’s girls were much better at the end, capturing the close set 25-23 and a final berth.
“It was a tough match and good rallies from both teams. Even though they didn’t show their best today, I am proud of my team that they found the way to win. My players are getting confidence and hope that they will bring out their best form in the final,” the India coach commented after the match.
India will next face the winners between Thailand and Kazakhstan in the Thursday’s final.
